This Women in History Month, we honour May Weatherly, a remarkable educator whose vision and dedication helped shape opportunities for generations of young women in Victoria.

Educated in Hobart and at Methodist Ladies’ College, Kew, May brought both expertise and compassion to her work. In 1929 she became the first Principal of the Homecraft Hostel, leading the school until her retirement in 1938. At a time when formal training in home management was rare, May helped establish a curriculum that went far beyond cookery – students learned practical home management, domestic science, household organisation, hygiene, child welfare, laundry, needlework and other life skills designed to build confidence, independence and a sense of professionalism in domestic and institutional settings.

“She guided the hostel through the first difficult years, as perhaps no one else could have done.” Known for her great rapport with students, May encouraged them to grow not only in practical competence but also in self‑assurance and leadership – qualities that stayed with many long after they left the Hostel.

Under her leadership, the Hostel eventually found a permanent home at Invergowrie, Hawthorn, generously gifted to the Association of Headmistresses of Girls’ Registered Secondary Schools of Victoria by the family and trustees of the Sir William McPherson estate. In recognition of her lasting impact, the May Weatherly Memorial Hall, built in 1957, was named in her honour – a testament to her influence on the lives of young women and on women’s education more broadly.

May’s commitment extended beyond the Hostel. During World War II, she voluntarily organised a day nursery in South Yarra for children of mothers engaged in essential war work, ensuring that support for women extended into the community at large.

Through her leadership, care and vision, May Weatherly empowered women to develop practical skills, independence, and confidence – leaving a legacy that continues to inspire today.
